The student (Sada Ali Hussain) has discussed her thesis on improving the active contour for medical image segmentation using Gradient Vector Flow (GVF). It is one of the active contour methods proposed in this research. In addition, a new technique is applied to reduce initial contour boundaries by first mapping four points around the medical problem and then connecting them to polynomial curves. Furthermore, the positive effect of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) on the calculation of the final active contour area and its percentage to the entire image area has been shown to detect the optimal value of the initial parameters.
The proposed external force segmentation is examined with different regions on computed tomography (CT) images, which are representative of the datasets of this research. The case study is limited to 300 medical images: 100 for cyst issues, 100 for tumor issues, and 100 for gallstone issues.
